WWF: A New Green Portable File Format

Currently Global Warming is one of the biggest problem for Human Society but Trees are the main weapon to control and reduce Global Warming, some of Companies/Organisations is already used green energies for save money and help to reduce Global Warming but for Paper rapidly entire forests are cut down which is obviously increased Global Warming.

To reduce the unnecessary printing of paper World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF) has introduced a new green file format called WWF. This WWF format is similar as PDF but the main differance with PDF format is that PDF file can be printed easily but this WWF format can not be printed. It’s a simple way to avoid unnecessarily printing. So here's your chance to save trees and help the environment. Decide for yourself which documents don't need printing out – then simply save them as WWF.

"Every day, entire forests are cut down to make paper. Paper that’s senselessly used to print out documents all over the world: websites, emails, even entire reports instead of those few pages that are really
needed and read. This happens in spite of the fact that it's easy to avoid
printing by saving the document as a PDF. But even PDFs can sometimes also be printed out. So to stop unnecessary printing and encourage a new awareness about the use of paper, we’ve developed a new, green file format: WWF. A format that can’t be printed out. A simple idea that saves trees. Join in. Decide for yourself which of your documents don’t need printing - and save them as WWF."

To create a file in the WWF File Format, First you have to download a freeware application named WWF Software, which is basically install a Virtual Printer in your computer and change the default printer to this virtual printer and its default output format is .WWF. Using this virtual Printer you can convert any file to this WWF format, not only that you do not need any extra software to vied this WWF format file, even your existing PDF reader can open this new WWF file. When try to print this WWF format a popup window arrived with the following message -

"Sorry Printing this Document is not Allowed
Reason: the security permission of this document Prohibites printing."

Functions :
  1. With the WWF software you can easily create your own WWF documents.
  2. With the software, the option “SAVE AS WWF” is shown in the print menu as an alternative to the installed printers.
  3. WWF docs are shown with the WWF file symbol.
  4. In the MAC version you can change any documents you want to WWF format using a WWF converter in the dock.
The main bad point of using this Virtual Printer software is that after print a page in WWF format this software automatically added an extra page at the end of each WWF document file, explaining the purpose of the new WWF file format to first-time users (this function can be deactivated).

WWF also make a slogan "SAVE AS WWF, SAVE A TREE"

System requirements :
  1. MAC OS: G4, 10.4 (Tiger) or better.
  2. Windows OS: Dual-Core, Windows XP/SP3 or better.
Currently WWF Software support German, English, Spanish, French languages.

E-Waste: The Dark Side of Technology

GUIYU, China – The wastes arrive here by sea transport, mainly from North America, Japan and South Korea.
They sail across the Pacific Ocean in huge colorful containers and reach Hong Kong where they are moved into the storage areas of the largest commercial harbor in China, waiting before proceeding with their journey toward the Chinese hinterland.
During the day, along the terminal area leading to the dock, there is a constant coming and going of trucks commuting between the city and the rural areas of the Guangdong province.
That’s the place where dozens of millions of tons of electronic junk (e-waste) from all over the world are taken: computers, phones, televisions, printers, refrigerators and an infinite row of other obsolete devices destined to disposal or recovery of the precious metals inside their circuits.
Guiyu is a small town situated a few hours from Hong Kong. As soon as you leave the main road that cuts through the countryside and arrive in town, you can find yourself in a post-apocalyptic scenario where the only signs of civilization that remain are huge mountains of rubble made of tubes, plastic and silicon.
Guiyu is the largest electronic garbage collector in the world. Each year about 100,000 workers, including many children, are involved in the disposal operations and recovery of over 1.5 million tons of materials coming from the consumer technology industry, a quantity that is around 80% of the e-waste produced in a year by the entire China.
The processing of materials is performed using techniques that are not adequate and that over two decades have transformed this small plot of land located in the heart of China in one of the most polluted and unlivable areas of the planet.
In Guiyu the air you breathe leaves the taste of acid fumes in your mouth, resulting from uncontrolled combustion of plastics and metals. The water is not drinkable. The level of poisoning of groundwater has forced the authorities to prohibit even agricultural use. The incidence on the population of serious blood disorders and cancer is among the highest in the whole world.
Guiyu is just the most notorious example, but similar sites, according to a recent Greenpeace report, are located, in a more or less official way, in many other developing areas such as Pakistan, India and Nigeria. These are the landfills of the world, the places where every technologically obsolete device ends its life, and where all means are legitimate.
For the more developed countries they represent nothing more than an investment with a very low cost, a mere matter of economic convenience that also lowers internal environmental impact. The sum of shipping costs and the entire process of disposal is by far less than what it would take to deal with the same materials in their places of origin.
For the countries that do import such wastes, e-waste is merely a business opportunity that feeds a gloomy total market value estimated at millions of dollars every year and causing untold damage to the environment and the quality of life of the people involved.
Some years ago PlanetFunk shot the video of their popular song “Stop Me” in Guiyu. With this data in our hands, maybe it’s time to say “Please, stop”.

Internet Explorer 9 to get tracking protection

IE9 logo
Microsoft this morning detailed changes to Internet Explorer 9's security features that will better enable users to keep sites from tracking their activity across browsing sessions.
The feature, which is set to arrive in the first release candidate of IE9 early next year, uses a list to tell the browser which third-party page elements sites can and cannot be blocked from tracking. This includes elements ranging from advertisements to more mundane things like embedded widgets from particular providers.

On Microsoft's IE blog, Dean Hachamovitch, head of Internet Explorer development, explained how it works:
A Tracking Protection List (TPL) contains Web addresses (like msdn.com) that the browser will visit (or "call") only if the consumer visits them directly by clicking on a link or typing their address. By limiting the calls to these Web sites and resources from other Web pages, the TPL limits the information these other sites can collect.
You can look at this as a translation of the "Do Not Call" list from the telephone to the browser and web. It complements many of the other approaches being discussed for browser controls of Do Not Track.
In a Webcast announcing the feature, Hachamovitch said most users have "little awareness of who can track their activity," and that the feature stemmed from that. Hachamovitch also attributed the creation of the feature to the company's more open approach to developing features for IE9.
Microsoft's tracking protection tool gives users control over which site elements can track your activity during a browsing session. Green ones in this shot can, while the red cannot.

Microsoft is letting users and third-parties alike author protection lists and host them on their sites. Users can then download them to their browser. Microsoft has also created lists to resemble what Hachamovitch likened to an RSS feed, so that if additional sites are added or removed, it can be updated without the user having to seek out, or manually update.
Hachamovitch said tracking protection will not replace InPrivate filtering, a feature Microsoft added to IE in version 8. Instead, Hachamovitch referred to it as complementary, given that InPrivate filtering uses algorithms to control tracking, along with not persisting from session to session. Tracking protection, on the other hand, will remain on once a user turns it on.
Microsoft says tracking protection will not be on by default when it arrives next year. Users will need to opt-in to enable it, as well as seek out lists of sites, which will not ship with the browser once it's released.
So far, Microsoft's IE9 beta has been downloaded in excess of 15 million times since its release back in September.

Mobile Number Portability in India – A Reality Now!

Mobile Number Portability (MNP) in India, which has been delayed for more than two years now, has finally made its debut starting in the Haryana circle. Mobile Number Portability allows unhappy customers to switch to another mobile service provider within the same circle, while retaining their existing mobile telephone number. Mobile Number Portability service is expected to be launched in other circles also by the end of this year itself.

It is estimated that, 10 percent of the mobile subscriber base is expected to avail MNP service in the first year. MNP implementation is expected to improve the competition and the quality of service as well.
Mobile Number Portability will also play a significant role in the 3G space as not all the operators have spectrum. So, a subscriber of a mobile operator which does not have 3G services may look to move to an operator who has.
The maximum time period for porting would be seven working days except in Jammu & Kashmir, Assam and North East licenced service areas, wherein it would be 15 working days.

Notion Ink Adam Pre-Orders to Start on December 9th?

notion-ink-adam
Notion Ink Adam has to be one of the most awaited new gadgets this holiday season. Earlier this month, we had reported that Adam is sure to land before Christmas and pre-ordering will start in December. Now, we seem to know the actual date for the pre-orders – December 9th.

Some eagle eyed folks at Android Police have come out with the date (Dec 9th) based on the number listed on Notion Ink’s redesigned homepage which was 10001 two days back, 10000 yesterday and 1111 today. For those who are not familiar with the binary code, the initial number listed there was said to have been 17, followed by 16 yesterday, and 15 today.
Since the number changes each day, it supposedly counts down to December 9th, most probably the day when the new tablet PC would be made available for pre-order for all of those who are interested in purchasing it. Now that is exactly in line with Notion Ink’s CEO – Rohan Shravan’s announcement of an early December date for pre-orders.
As you might know, Adam tablet was supposed to be launched in Q1 2010 and the date was dragged on due to investor issues. Now that everything seems settled and in-place, the Bangalore based company is confident of Christmas launch of its Android based tablet.
Strategically as well, December 9th seems to be an ideal date for pre-orders to start, since the holiday season would have just begun in US and other countries. According to a recent survey, Apple iPads have outdone Microsoft’s Xbox 360 as the in-demand gadget this holiday season. Adam, being touted as the strongest competitor to iPad, can really make the most of the holiday season if priced properly.
We have reached out to Notion Ink for their comments on the pre-order date and will update the post as and when we get a reply.

How to get @facebook.com email address

Now any Facebook user can get unique @facebook.com email address for sending and receiving messages. It will be your social inbox where focus will be on actual message and sender. There are no usual email elements like subject lines, cc and bcc as found in popular email service providers like Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Live Hotmail. You can also strictly control who can send you message at your @facebook.com email address.

Setup @facebook.com email ID address

Diaspora – Open source Facebook alternative

disporaDo you know about Diaspora? No problem, I will tell you what Diaspora is. Diaspora is a new Open Source, Facebook alternative which is supposed to be launched on September 15th, the same day whenMicrosoft launches its most awaited web browser IE9.

They said, “We have Diaspora working, we like it, and it will be open-sourced on September 15th.” That’s just three weeks away. Its a good news for the Open Source people, that an Open Source social networking site is being launched and I am happy for them.
Diaspora is a project begun by four students at NYU’s Courant Institute. They propose to build an open-source, distributed social network as an alternative to companies such as Facebook. It got famous when many stories about the privacy and security of Facebook was leaked to the public and this helped Diaspora to rise a funding of $200,000.
That’s all about Diaspora for now. Lets expect a better and perfect open source networking site and I am anxiously looking forward to the release.

Nokia Ovi Store hits 3 million daily downloads

The Ovi Store is now seeing 3 million downloads each day.
The Ovi Store is now seeing 3 million downloads each day.
Nokia's Ovi Store has officially hit 3 million downloads per day.
The Finnish mobile phone maker attributed the new milestone to higher global demand for its apps and new smartphones sporting the more user-friendly Symbian 3 operating system.
In late September, Nokia began shipping its N8 smartphone, its first to run under Symbian 3, followed a couple of weeks later by the second Symbian 3 phone, the C7. The new version of Symbian has brought with it a greater variety of new apps in the Ovi Store.
Nokia has also been working hard to lure in more developers. In September, the company launched a new contest offering app developers a total of $10 million in cash and prizes. It also said recently that it would focus solely on Qt as its mobile development platform, helping developers by ensuring that their apps would run under future versions of both Symbian andMeeGo.
Over the past year, more than 400,000 new developers have joined Forum Nokia, the company's development community, Nokia said. Among all its developers, 92 have each grabbed more than 1 million downloads for their apps so far. Further, Nokia has seen 1.5 million downloads of its Qt development toolkits.
"Ovi Store is on a strong trajectory fueled by new apps and games from a growing number of partners and more than 250,000 new consumers signing up for Ovi every day," Tero Ojanpera, executive vice president of services for Nokia, said in a statement. "The number of daily downloads has increased from about 2 million to 3 million since September. We anticipate our progress will continue as we have just begun shipping our new Symbian smartphones."
Since the September 30 release of the N8, the top downloaded free app in the Ovi Store was Q Torch, which turns a phone into a flashlight, Nokia said. Among paid software, the top app wasAngry Birds, a game that's taken off on several mobile platforms. Another hot app among Nokia consumers was Need for Speed Shift HD, the third most popular downloaded program around the world since September.
Despite the healthy growth of the Ovi Store, Nokia still faces a variety of challenges overall. The company holds a leading smartphone market share across the world, but that dominance has been chipped away by Google's Android and other rivals. Nokia is also struggling to make more of a dent in North America, where it holds only around 3 percent of the market.
